Thanks to our amazing naming rights sponsor - Clinico Denture and Hearing the 2023 tournament held on Saturday and Sunday 30th September and 1st October was a great success and supported by a full field of 32 teams of four.
The event commenced Friday evening with a great dinner prepared by the local Lions Club and was followed by our amazing two guest celebrity bowlers, Tayla Bruce and Selina Goddard. Tayla who resides in Christchurch and a member at the Burnside Bowling Club had recently returned from Queensland where she took out the 2023 World Singles title. In doing so she became just the third New Zealander to win the women's singles crown after Elsie Wilkie in 1973 and 1977 and Val Smith in 2008. Added to this amazing feat in 2022 she was a bronze medal finalist in the fours and triples in Birmingham.
Great team mate Selina Goddard who plays out of Takapuna Bowling Club is a three time Commonwealth Games medalist having won two bronze medals at Birmingham in 2022 and a further bronze at Glasgow in 2014. Listening to these two inspiration young women was a definite highlight of the evening.
Saturday morning saw the green flooded after a night of heavy rain. Plan B for the day was put into action with teams split into two groups competing on the carpet green for shortened ends. Fortunately with a few showers in between play was able to be completed with teams contesting 3 games each.
It was great relief for the organisers when Sunday resulted in a sunny but windy day and enabled the Championship and Gold Divison finals to be held on the lawn green and the Silver and Bronze divison playing their finals on the carpet.
